Summer Palace
“Noah’s Ark”

Summer Palace (aka “Sum Pal”) is the stage name of multi-instrumentalist and producer Noah Gurley. In the years since his previous works, Gurley has spent time writing songs that vividly delve into childhood memories, the loss of a family member, and the realities of a long distance relationship, as well as opening for acts like Perfume Genius. The upcoming release from Gurley, "Lost Creek", is comprised of auto-tuned vocals, synths, guitars, cello over 808, and much more.

Brian Smith
"Satan Fills The Clown Car Up On Someone Else’s Dime”

Brian Smith is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter who, after years of genre experimentation, recently settled into a country idiom. He grew up on John Prine and Lyle Lovett, then spent his formative years as an artist in Nashville, so his return to Americana seems inevitable. In spite of this, he approaches country music as a sort of roguish outsider, as exemplified by "Satan Fills the Clown Car Up." With its gnarly passing chords, ominous lyrical vignettes and a slide guitar solo played with a steak knife, "Satan" harkens back to the early days of outlaw country by cutting new rough edges into a genre that is eternally torn between its twin desires for commercial validation and rough-hewn authenticity.

Abby Johnson

“After The Cigarette”

With fresh energy and bright intuition, Abby Johnson’s confident self-titled debut (due in late 2021) offers timeless folk songwriting teeming with a classic Nashville golden-era sheen. Johnson draws upon genre-spanning influences and wrangles them effortlessly into her own expression: “I want my songs to sound familiar, but tell you something new,” she says. The duality of Laurel Canyon nostalgia and indie rock blend effortlessly in her songs, polished further by the airtight backing band of fellow Nashvillian's, Ornament (and produced by the band’s drummer, Ryan Donoho).

CrumbSnatchers
“All Mine”

Knoxville, Tennessee’s Crumbsnatchers is a deliciously listenable band. A generous and inventive recipe of rock, pop, punk, and new wave influences combine to create sweet, swirling ear-candy out of transcendent hooks and blaring riffs.

Crumbsnatchers’ catchy songs echo the wit of Pixies and Talking Heads, with the fervent force of Beastie Boys. Their contagiously immersive music has a habit of crushing your inhibitions into a fine paste and then painting the word “PARTY” on your brain with it.

Hikko Mori
“Alternate Takes (Demo Version)”

I wasn’t planning on making anything, the day I started this song. I found some inspiration, played around with the MPC, found some drums I liked and in an hour or so I had the loop.

I had contemplated whether I wanted to make something new for this sampler or dig up something I already had, but I knew this was it. I hit up Jack Filipovic to lay down bass. Since, I’m not in Nashville right now, he emailed back that track within a few hours. I did all the mixing and tried to keep everything pretty simple. Money is tight, so I just use Bandlab or Soundcloud to master.

For now, this demo is a lofi beat to study to, but the plan is to recruit some more musicians to help make this a complete song. I've been making beats solo for a few years now, but my goal is to assemble some sort of hip-hop rock band soon.

CECI
“Just Kids”

Ceci is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter whose writing focuses on reflections, intimate experiences, real and imagined fears, observations, and questions. Her melodies both tender and powerful aim to provide the listener a place to feel accepted and comforted. The song "Just Kids" is a brief and specific reflection of an average day at elementary school. She recounts the simplicity/routine of her days then, and the strangeness she feels now for days that somehow feel never ending and over too soon.

Griffin Moyer
“Freedom of the Mind”

Griffin Moyer is a Nashville-based songwriter operating primarily under one principle – if you’re going to say something, you might as well be honest. Taking notes from 60’s songwriting greats while drawing from personal experiences and unfiltered emotions for inspiration, Moyer writes in plainspeak and sings in a clear voice to honestly portray how variable a life can be.

Home Visions
“The Old Laughing Lady” by Neil Young

Home Visions is the songwriting project of Neil MacLean, named after his father's old home remodeling business. MacLean's songs are memoir-style explorations of what might have been in the form of indie rock with heavy dance affectations.

"I was digging into Neil Young's catalog a few years back and 'The Old Laughing Lady' instantly stood out to me for some reason. In that moment, I imagined the song as what it could be - a sprawling and high-energy dance tune that remains oddly faithful to the original"

Sister Kit
“Work”

“Work” is a new tune that I wrote pretty quickly. Robbie Jackson (Keeps/Liza Anne) helped flesh out the details for the demo with bass and mixing. All I could think about at the time was how much I didn’t love the job I was clocking into most days and how it all started to feel the same. The lyrics are more stream of consciousness and I wanted the tune to have an energy that would be super fun to play live whenever we book our next show. We really miss shows and seeing so many friends in one place.

DoomFolk StarterKit
“Look at Miss Ohio” by Gillian Welch

DoomFolk StarterKit is the songwriting project of Portland, OR based David Swick. When DoomFolk StarterKit began, Swick would write and record a song on iPhone Garageband in one hour and then release it on Bandcamp, no matter what the end result, as an exercise in trusting instincts and eliminating self editing tendencies.

In the summer of 2020, DoomFolk StarterKit released SleepyGhost, a 5 song ep written and recorded in a 24hr period on the themes of conflict avoidance and confronting apathy. Since then, Swick has teamed up with Nashville’s Like You Mean It Records and is poised for a new release in 2021.
